Hello!

reference_library is a project aimed at collecting useful links, resources, and materials to help one another out. Members are encouraged to drop links of useful content on the main topic pages, to be added to the lists as the mod (me) can do so. (Often once a week, when new material is available.)

Our sticky page has the topics, and each topic page is linked there. As of today (YAY!) the topics are broken out into sub-categories as well to make them easier to search through.

sound_design is a comm for sound designers, sound engineers, sound editors and sound artists whether professional, amateur or students to talk about sound. Whether that takes the form of film, television, animations, theatre or art installation. See a film with utterly awesome (or utterly appalling) sound? Learn a trick you just want to enthuse endlessly about or have a problem you could do with some suggestions to fix? This is the place for it.

crossroles: For those who are a fan of a specific type of crossover, where two or more fandoms that share an actor are tossed together and any startling similarities are explained with excuses of long-lost (or not so lost) identical twins, secret pasts, alternate universes, clones, or whatever else.

fandomacademia: A community for those nerdiest of nerds, the ones who enjoy writing scholarly articles and critical papers. At least, about interesting but not necessarily academically acceptable sources. This is specifically a community for those articles, papers, essays, or even just academic discussions on not so academic subjects.

maydecember: A place for those who enjoy respectful depictions of relationships with significant age-gaps.

promptmemes: Meant to be a resource with links to prompt memes all around DW as well as a place to create and contribute to the memes themselves, in any fandom or category.

inkingitout is now open for sign-ups. This is a large word-count challenge that will run from January 2012 for anyone who wants to write at least 75,000 words next year. This is not fandom-only: the scope of the challenge includes original fiction, fan fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, theses, dissertations, journalism, etc.!

daily_words is a writing comm that also builds your vocabulary. Taken from the user info:

A vocabulary word gets posted once a day, with the meaning.

If the word strikes you, or you really want to remember it, or the mood just is all upon you, you post a short piece using the word of the day. The piece can be original or in any fandom. For any kind of prose, please attempt at least 50 words. Any kind of poetry is also welcome. Pieces over 100 words, please cut. You're also free (of course!) to post the fic in your own journal. Just post a link with your story!

If you don't feel like writing something for that day's word, no problem. Wait until the fancy strikes.

monstrous_regiment is a new community for women to discuss military subjects.

What this community is about

Military history and military fandoms are sometimes seen as "boys' interests". If a woman expresses interest -- whether academic, fannish, or just as a hobby -- it's often seen as an oddity.

This community exists as a space for women to talk about the military and related topics: history, historiography, culture, representations in media, book/tv/film reviews, research, fannish creations and meta, etc.

Anything related to the military or to military conflict is welcome. To be explicit, "military" includes any military force (incl. navy, air force, etc), whether real or fictional, past, present, or future.

On being a women-centric community

This community exists to provide a space for women to talk about military subjects. We take a broad definition of "woman", and if you identify as one, then we include you. We don't require any assertion or test to qualify for membership -- in fact anyone may join -- but we ask that those who don't identify as women respect the space we've set up here, and don't try to usurp the conversation (whether in posts or comments).

Where the name comes from

The term "Monstrous Regiment" originally comes from a 16th century political tract called The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women, complaining about female heads of state at the time (especially Mary I of England and Mary Queen of Scots). Monstrous Regiment is also the title of a humorous fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett, part of the Discworld series, about a girl who runs away to join the army, and which contains considerable commentary on women and the military.
