Newcomers
Cohost is now read-only. Some bloggers have finished reposting their content from Cohost to their new Dreamwidth blogs. See "Cohost News" for more details about what's happening and what you can do. As a result, there's a wave of new users coming into Dreamwidth.
newcomers is a new community for people who are just getting started on Dreamwidth, in the tradition of
twitter_refugees and
reddit_refugees. This community supports former users of other platforms who are moving to Dreamwidth because their previous platform has become untenable or has closed. As such, it will increase activity with each wave of new users, in hopes of helping them get settled in Dreamwidth so they want to stick around. It also serves previous users returning after a long hiatus, people who want to do more with a Dreamwidth blog that was only intermittent, or anyone else who wants help connecting and figuring out how to use this venue.
This community talks about things like how to do tasks on Dreamwidth, especially in terms of replicating some of the functions that people used to use on other platforms, and how to find things you like here. It offers people a place to look for friends they knew from elsenet who might be on Dreamwidth. It gives people a place to ask questions about how to accomplish tasks or find things on this platform. There will be occasional announcements and networking with other communities and events where folks can make connections.
We also encourage Dreamwidth users who wish to welcome new folks to this platform and help them learn how to make the most of it. If you've been around long enough to have an audience and like reaching out to make new friends, please join in. You can also help by spreading the word, linking to useful posts on the community, or otherwise encouraging people to drop by here if they are new and/or have questions about this platform.
See our Introduction / Friending Meme to introduce yourself, or find your Cohost friends. You can also copy those questionnaires to your own blog to spread the networking farther.

Dreamwidth has picked up dozens of people from Cohost, just that I've spotted (people using the Cohost tag or interest, people joining
Usually Dreamwidth gets a new wave of users once every year or two as some other platform offends its users or closes altogether. The previous one that I know of was Reddit in June of 2023, and before that Twitter in November 2022. I encourage people to watch for these ways, encourage folks to try out Dreamwidth, and reach out to new users here to help them find resources so they'll want to stick around. If you're into that sort of thing, consider joining
