newcomers is a new community for people who are just getting started on Dreamwidth, in the tradition of twitter_refugees and reddit_refugees. This community supports former users of other platforms who are moving to Dreamwidth because their previous platform has become untenable or has closed. As such, it will increase activity with each wave of new users, in hopes of helping them get settled in Dreamwidth so they want to stick around. It also serves previous users returning after a long hiatus, people who want to do more with a Dreamwidth blog that was only intermittent, or anyone else who wants help connecting and figuring out how to use this venue.
goals_on_dw is a new community for people who like goals and goal setting. A key focus will be New Year's resolutions, that being among the most popular contexts for such activities. Although the most common time is January 1, "new year" can also refer to other calendars or cultures, whatever works for you. Alternatively, just pick a time that works for you and go for it. You can introduce yourself or make new friends here.
We will talk about different goal systems, pros and cons of resolutions, arts and crafts for tracking goals, human psychology, and more. You can share your resolutions or other goals. There will be check-in posts in January for folks to talk about their accomplishments. The community is warming up as more people post things!
moodthemeinayear, a community dedicated to creating custom mood themes, is starting its next round of the Minimum and Medium Mood Tracks tonight. If you're interested in following along and organizing enough images to min-max a custom mood theme on the Minimum Track, or branching out a little farther on the Medium Track, now is a great time to start! And feel free to join in on the Maximum Track simultaneously, if you want to really diversify your mood theme.
Meanwhile, in NSFW news, summerofthe69 has opened up theme suggestions for the 2025 round. Summer of the 69 is a festival dedicated to works featuring the sexual position, open to all fandoms and to original creations. It runs from June 9th through September 6th, to encompass "6/9" in both common date formats: Month first and day first. Themes are posted once a week and run for two weeks each, with the exception of the final two, which are cut short by the date. Theme voting will open on May 1st and run through May 15th, to give potential participants time to plan for the fest.

Today is your last chance to save things from Cohost. The site is scheduled to disappear permanently at the end of December 31. Some bloggers have finished reposting their content from Cohost to their new Dreamwidth blogs. If you're done with yours, leave a comment there to direct readers to your material here. See "Cohost News" for more details about what's happening and what you can do. As a result, there's a wave of new users coming into Dreamwidth.

creativegolf is a new community for creatives of all kinds modeled after the game 9 card golf. Players are given randomized "decks" based off prompt lists and the goal of the game is to complete a column of 3 fills with all works in each column given the same theme. Playing for points is entirely optional but hopefully fun! Come check us out.

This will be the last signal boost for the community in 2024, then the next one will appear in January 2025 so folks can see the heightened activity after the 1st.
Once a week starting in January, the community mod will make a post with three mood themes. Those are the suggested moods to work on for that week. In those posts, you can talk with other community members, brainstorm, encourage each other, make suggestions, and generally cheer one another on. You are welcome to post any mood images you make to the community as you go, and you are welcome to join or leave the community at any point in the schedule.
Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:
The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle
Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.
While Dreamwidth requires a paid account to use a custom mood theme, you do not need a paid account or even to want to use a custom mood theme to participate in this community! If you're intrigued by the idea of creating a custom mood theme, or just watching along and potentially cheering on others as they do so, you are welcome to join in the fun to the extent you feel comfortable. (There's also the secret hidden option of creating a mood theme with completely original/copyright-free images and submitting it to Dreamwidth to be a possible site-supported mood theme 👀)
