I would love to see contributions from other people. I feel a bit lonely. ;)

Edit: membership is open to anyone but you don't need to be a member to be able to post.

I feel like I should note that the community is currently closed--which is fine, but it seems a little at odds with your description!

Oh, anybody can post. You don't need to be a member to do so. I never understood the need for open or even moderated membership if there aren't members-only posts.

Oh, I didn't even realize that, sorry! It makes me wonder if some of the nav strip logic should be retooled to have post an entry there if people are able to instead of telling them the community is closed.

I don't display the nav strip so I don't how it works. It doesn't tell you can post?

It does on the profile--it doesn't say you *can't* post, but a community set up like this is unusual, so somebody ditzy like me might not assume they can. Having it in the nav strip instead of saying the community is closed (which is true, but could be something more useful) might help.

Yeah, I know. It's not the default setting. I think it's a shame. I don't like it when I have to be a member to post. In my experience, it also means that you end up with a lot of members who have stopped reading the comm or have left the site a long time ago.

Well, membership also means the community shows up in your 'post to' in the update screen, which is an advantage. Open membership and open posting aren't mutually exclusive, either.

Well, I think we can make some changes that make more sense, like letting people post from the nav strip.

Sure and thank you for that but yvi has a good point. If communities you've subscribed to and can post to are not on the update page...

Oh, that might have been my doing (I coded the 'Community is closed' bit, though I am pretty sure there wasn't a post option before?). I suppose that can be easily fixed, though :)

Well, I think the logic is mostly sound if you're not thinking about this case. If someone isn't a member of a community, you offer to let them join. If someone is, you offer to let them post. But if the community is closed, you're not a member and can't join so it says the community is closed instead of checking to see if someone can post. It makes sense until you think about edge case communities like this one!

Hmm, looking at the patch, I just replaced 'join community'. 'post to community' never showed up for community that let non-members post.
